A Rainbow of Vegetarian Delights
The long needed pantry sort/take stock day was today.
Having been pseudo-vegetarian (we are eaters of fish, eggs and cheese) for going on thirty years, I have the balanced nutrition thing down pat*. Getting enough lean protein and amino acids in our diet is a daily challenge and to that end, certain food items in my pantry are considered staples.
Found today and pictured from left to right: pine nuts, lentils, pumpkin seeds, pinto beans, light red kidney beans, dark red kidney beans, wild rice (the grains are harvested up north by canoe - the canoes paddle through the shallow rice marshes and the plants are bent over the canoe, the seeds tapped into the bottom)
On the list to get: quinoa and amaranth.
Doing this made me realize that when I say, in a pathetic, whiny voice: "There is nothing in the house to eat, honeyeee!", what I'm really saying is: "All the food items we have need to be combined with other food items in a creative and delicious way in order to produce a meal, and I can't be arsed really don't feel like cooking!"
*understand the concept-don't always carry it out.
