Take your 4x4 and cross the jungle to this paradise beachfront located in Southern Nicaragua. This is the stereotypical beachfront hut, which serves everything from its fast food menú, accompanied by the national standard Toña beer (or Victoria for the old-school kids) while you dig your toes into its pristine sands. This part of Nicaragua is a favourite with the Surfers and the city of San Juan del Sur has the eternal holiday feel to it. It's not a loud resort but you still feel it’s the biggest in Nicaragua, with the above-average number of gringos, riding in the back of the Hilux's trucks driving towards the beaches to "hit the waves" – with their surf boards peering out.

A weekend was more than enough to get a feel to the place, and this resort will be definitely on my books for a return trip, as each beachfront restaurant offers its own experience (amongst the array of fresh pulpo and pescado). Having suffered the pimienta/lemon/salt-infused beer (aka a Michelada) at the Pirates bar I wish to indulge in some more live music coming from the Black Whale…
