Retail Heritage

As I walked to a meeting this afternoon I passed the iconic red bricked Jenners Depository. Built in 1925, the building was to provide storage for the Jenners Department Store on Princes Street. The site was close enough to the city centre to enable easy transfer of goods to the store and the layout was designed to provide easy manoeuvrability for horse and cart.

In 2006, Jenners Department Store was sold to the House of Fraser and the Depository was no longer needed by the store. The building and site were purchased by Edinburgh Self Storage and after a full renovation it was turned into a modern self storage facility but wth its original features and characteristics in tact.

The Depository seemed rather cheerful today as I walked past, its red bricks shining out against the dull light of a cloudy December day!
