Scribble

Hawthorn always looks good in winter, charcoal scribbles against the sky. These wind-stunted ones by the railway line are my favourite. The knotted trunks are burnished by generations of sheep nuzzling up to them in bad weather, their lanolin fleeces making the wood shiny, like it's been highly polished.
