Day 5 of DDW/MollyMay's December daily challenge - History

Yesterday's blip seems to have got you puzzling, but to quote that famous Blankety Blank catchphrase "the clue is in the question", or in this case the answer was in the blip.

I did say "Here's a puzzle for you", because that is precisely what it was - a puzzle, the idea being that you could get the piece of string out of the centre piece to release the wooden ring. This one must be faulty though, since I have completely failed to do it.

How does that tie in to a theme of history? - well, now you have some history around yesterday's mystery, he says grasping at straws.
