Tidal surge x 2
Interesting times! The biggest tidal surge since 1950-something hit the town - twice. The first one, at around 2.30am, did flood some homes - and the Albion pub*. The second high tide, in the afternoon, wasn't as bad and I don't think any additional damage was caused.
The first photo was early this morning at Standard Quay which shows the entire quay covered in a thin film of mud. The water reached the base of the wooden quayside buildings and some of the businesses suffered damage.
The second photo is the same place at the afternoon high tide. The boats are right up to quayside level, kept in place by the big vertical wooden beams (which probably have a special name) which prevent them from drifting onto the quay. The water has leaked onto the quay from a point behind the camera where there isn't a low-walled edge.
Our house stayed dry (a 5 metre rise in sea levels will start to worry me) but my commiserations to those whose homes were flooded.
*Edit: TWO pubs - The Swan & Harlequin, my pub of choice to watch Sky Sports and BT Sports football matches, was also flooded.
