Come Hither Little Fly

There are several different types of Carnivorous plants in Florida. This is a Hooded Pitcher Plant. It has developed a very effective method to catch it's Prey. It produces a sweet liquid which is stored in the bottom of the Pitcher. When insects come snooping around they fall into this liquid, which is similar to the digestive juices in our stomachs, and are broken down into substances the plant can utilize. Some large Pitchers are even able to trap small frogs. Pitcher plants thrive in wet, boggy areas. I have tried for years to grow them but even though I have two Green Thumbs, I always fail miserably at keeping them alive for more than a year. The Plant in my photo is Thriving at our local Botanical Gardens.
