Discovering
Set off for Epping Forest, its just up the road ... or down the road ... its a fragment of its former self and is now a sort of linear park through East London. It's London's largest open space, but narrow. There is a great story of late 19th century preservation, protests about enclosure and trying to save open space for the people, which they finally did with an Act in 1878. Now the City of London manages it.
A wonderful walk today to Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, more correctly really King Henry VIII's Great Stand - a grandstand from which to observe the hunt. It's still there and fascinating, after nearly 500 years. Then a mosey around Chingford - a little village caught up in London.
I like how the house sitting has brought me to places I would have otherwise missed.
There are some wonderful glass slide images on www.ehive.com, the Epping Forest Collection. Thanks for a great day Epping Forest, I'll be back!
