What's In A Street Name? 4 - Corunna Drive

Not a very exciting picture at first glance, but another Horsham road with a story behind it. Corunna Drive is a short road off Depot Road and lies directly on the site of the Depot the army established there during the Napoleonic Wars. Corunna is a port city in the north of Spain in Galicia and fought on 16th January 1809 nearby was one of the battles of the Peninsular War - the Battle Of Corunna.
In a nutshell, Napoleon had deafeated the Spanish armies , forcing the British to withdraw to the coast following an unsuccessful attack led by Lt Gen Sir John Moore to try and divert the French. The British suffered greatly during their winter march across Spain and had to wait for ships to arrive for embarkation home. The French forced the British to fight a battle before they could embark during which the French attacks were repulsed. Sir John Moore was mortally wounded in the attack and the British were able to leave but not without many casualties. So this little road in Horsham recalls one of the major battles of the Peninsular and Napoleonic Wars.
