Beautiful Wild Giant
Would you believe that this is a wild (indigenous) Australian plant? It's a Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa). This flower spike is approximately 6 metres high!
This one though is growing in a garden in Maleny; in the wild these tough plants are stimulated to flower after a bush fire has swept through their habitat; gardeners can encourage flowering by placing a smooth stone over the plant's centre which stimulates its flowering chemicals to kick in.
