Precious Vessels

Each year a pair of starlings nest in my letterbox. Back in October they laid 4 eggs but when I checked on them a week later the eggs were gone. I left the nest in there assuming they'd lay again but they didn't. So I took it out and threw it on the ground - knowing from experience that they would 'rebuild' the nest from the mess on the ground.

No, no, no. Not this year's lot. They chose to leave the mess on the ground and rebuild from the lovely fresh pea straw on my garden instead.

Anyway, they have just laid 3 eggs this time. I hope they hatch within the next few days. Here is last year's babies.

I have to have a sign on my letterbox - asking the postie not to post the mail there. It upsets my resident birds.
