Laptop motherboard, and one of the main chips with its heatsink removed. That pale blue layer that looks like icing, is a thermal paste. It's intended to form a good thermal connection between the lump of silicon semiconductor, underneath it, and the heatsink. All in an effort to keep the chip cool. Normally it would squashed down in the assembly process, but this one was barely touching the heatsink. Perhaps that's why it's stopped working...
Had to admit defeat with this laptop - no sign of life about it whatsoever. Only good news is that the hard disk data is all okay.
Fairly dire day out so indoor jobs today.
