Farewell, Nelson Mandela

I can remember watching the live footage of Mandela being freed whilst I was passing through my university canteen. I wasn't fully tuned in to global or individual injustices yet, but understood enough to marvel at the enormity of what was happening. In life, his mixed record as president notwithstanding, he offered a personal example that his successors sadly haven't followed. We however can do much better - who after all can genuinely disagree with this:

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
