Cape Chestnut

This beautiful Calodendrum Capense which grows alongside the N2 motorway as it winds its way along the Knysna Lagoon flowers at this time of the year.

Unfortunately it is difficult to get any sense of scale from this picture and it is impossible to get close because of the dense bush that can be seen in the foreground.

I would estimate the flowering canopy to be at least 15 meters ( about 50') across and the tree would be about 10m high. When fruit is set is its not unusual for the local troop of baboons to make themselves at home in its branches for the feast.

More about this tree can be read here

No "Sunday Skies" today as the sky is uniformly grey!
