Interior of St Nicholas, Compton, Surrey
Despite the awful weather, Mum and I went out and we passed Compton and I nipped in to the church to take a hopefully interesting picture! This church dates from Saxon times and is full of interest. This is also the only church I know that has two sanctuaries one above the other. Most of the walls and arches that you see in the picture date from the 11th and 12th Centuries and the Pulpit with it's canopy, known as a Tester or Sounding Board was made in 1620. When I visited I met the Rector who told me she had been there all day and was getting ready for the Christingle Service later this afternoon. It is quite amazing to note that the list of Rectors here goes back to 1189 - the first year of the reign of King Richard I (the Lionheart).
