Or apparently to grow. I went for a small tree this year. It is - supposedly - alive and pot grown so it should survive a few years and grow a bit. The first year I was in this house I got a bay tree which is now about eight feet tall.

As well as thinking it was a bit daft to spend quite a lot of money on something that lasts a couple of weeks and then gets chucked (although they do make great kindling for the wood burner) I also felt that when so many people struggle to find the money for food let alone decorations, much as I love decorating it was a bit unpleasant to spend so much on a tree.
