Start Point

Eventually the rain has let off and so we went for a walk on the coast down by Start Point - just under an hour away.
A great little headland with the beaches up to Slapton sweeping away to the north. A pretty rocky ridge leads down to the lighthouse, automated as they now all are. The ridge provided an interesting scramble at times.
Sam and Charlotte then walked on to Beesands and we met up in the pub there - a village lies under the waves offshore near here having disappeared as recently as 1917.
On then to Slapton, the scene of over 600 soldiers being killed, many by so called friendly fire, in a training exercises for D Day - a classic case of miscommunications between different forces leading to needless deaths.
There is no mention of the disaster on the main memorial. At the time everything was shrouded in secrecy. A sombre place made more so by today's battleship grey sea and sky.
