Lilies underfoot
Part of a pavement mosaic in Aberteifi/Cardigan commemorating the composer of possibly Wales's favourite song tune Calon Lân (Pure Heart): popular hymn, regular rugby anthem and consummate hiraeth inducer.
John Hughes (1872-1914) was born in a small cottage in Penbryn 2 miles away before his family moved to Swansea where he went on to have a career in the steel industry. He wrote the music for the words written by his friend Daniel James. In English the chorus translates something like this:
Oh pure heart, so true and tender
Fairer than the lilies white
The pure heart alone can render
Songs of joy both day and night.
Everyone who's anyone has sung it but none better than Pembrokeshire's own wonderful Cerys Matthews. Do listen!
You can see the mosaic in its entirety here, a picture I took on a rainy day almost exactly 7 years ago. I regret I have never been able to discover the artist responsible for this work. I should try harder.
