soldier cottages
soldier cottages not so far from us, this small picturesque soldier dwelling that served as the residence for the crofter soldier (soldier). These appeared in the 1600's and into the 1800's as foot soldiers and lived in villages with grants consisting of food from the richer peasants. Today, the house was used as a summer residence.
We had a similar house with the same background many years ago as a summer house. We even had a list of everyone who lived there and the first soldiers never came home they were lost in the war over there in Finland and Russia. Even in the 1800's, there lived a cobbler with eleven children in this house and I do not understand how they survived in the woods without electricity and light.
