On the first floor of what used to be the old Midlothian County building and then, in 1975, the chambers for Lothian Regional Council, this is now called the Lothian Chambers and is the main registration office for Edinburgh where you can register a birth, death, marriage and a civil partnership. You can also have a civil marriage or civil partnership ceremony here.

The original County Hall was built between 1816 and 1818 with a design based on the Acropolis at Athens , later in 1892 plans were made for the extension and internal rearrangement of the building which created the building that sits between George IV Bridge and Parliament Square today. James McIntyre Henry was chosen to carry out the project and the reconstructed building was finally opened in 1904. The majority of the detailing, such as the wood panelling and the lighting, dates from this time.

This is looking through the central viewing well to the ground floor reception desk.
