Our Food Culture
I view this table as a personal victory. I had been lobbying my children's school for years to establish a wellness policy, to give the kids more than ten minutes to eat their lunch, to give non- food incentives to motivate their students, and to offer nutrition workshops to both students and staff. Those were just a few topics I talked about with every member of the school board, all four principals, the lunch ladies, the PTO board, countless parents, and the school director. And I stand here, in front of my daughter's fourth grade Christmas party refreshment table so happy to see that the typical cupcake, dorritoes and potato chips, and other sordid fake foods have been replaced with real fruits and veggies and low fat baked goodies. Thanks to the school's new wellness policy, my kid won't be coming home w a million candy canes ready to battle her immune system. It feels so good not to just be heard and understood and to see great changes, but to know our kids will learn a healthier lifestyle.
