Reason for Celebration

Back in the Day, Way Back in the Day...folks were fearful that they wouldn't survive the Darkness of the Winter. They noticed that, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, the days started getting longer and the nights shorter right around this time of the year. The Return of the Sun was cause enough for Great Celebration. So Winter Solstice marks the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere and the Longest Day in the Southern.

This realization is the basis for the Special Holidays of many of the world's major religions. Birth or ReBirth of the Sun/Son. Interesting that...but perhaps better left for another Blip.
