Yelena's Turkish coffee pot
Today Yelena and I were picked up by another couple and their two small sons and taken to a luncheon reception for a couple who are soon to be married. Their wedding will take place in Bombay/Mumbai and as many people won't be able to get there this was a reception for them – all 200 of them. Goodness knows how many will be at the wedding itself. There were two areas covered by white tarpaulin sheeting outside the back of the Naval Club (bride's father was in the Navy) and in one were swagged chairs and tables and the bar plus a noisy music center playing a variety of western and Indian music. In the other there were arranged round the sides a large number of huge brass pots filled with a delicious variety of foods, vegetarian and not, from different parts of the country. In another time and place I might have made a tour and tried them all but today that would not have been seemly! All the women were wearing beautiful sarees and shawls for it was cool outside and the jewellery was amazing – a few wore over the ear many layered gold drop earrings that have to be seen to be believed. I didn't think it was right to take my camera and there was only one person with a 'proper' one there but everyone had mobiles and were snapping away at families and friends. But they were also taking/making calls, texting and being quite engrossed in them which seemed rather extraordinary at a very posh do.
