" If Blood Will Flow, When Flesh & Steel are One"
This is the first line from FRAGILE written by Sting and I have sung many times. Today we popped down to Dunster and it was amazingly quiet. We thought it would be mobbed just before Christmas and were pleasantly surprised.
Normally you cant get near the Yarn Market so I thought I would take advantage and make this my blip. It is a fascinating structure and although I have blipped Dunster before and you may have seen the structure in the middle of the town, I have never focused on it before.
The Yarn Market in Dunster, Somerset, England was built around 1590 and has been designated as a Grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument.
The octagonal structure has a central stone pier which supports a heavy timber framework which carries a slate roof with central wooden lantern surmounted by a weather vane.
Dunster had become a centre for woollen and clothing production by the 13th century, with the market dating back to at least 1222, and a particular kind of kersey or broadcloth became known as 'Dunsters'.
Around 1590 George Luttrell, of the Luttrell family constructed the market to shelter traders and their wares from the rain.
One of the roof beams has a hole in it, a result of cannon fire in the Civil War, when Dunster Castle was a besieged Royalist stronghold for five months under the command of Colonel Wyndham. Following the damage, it was restored in 1647 to its present condition.
It is in the guardianship of English Heritage but is managed by the National Trust.
So I have learnt something today. We just use it to shelter from the rain.
We managed to buy some prezzies from the Castle shop for Mr A's mum who we will visit just after Christmas. Because she is 87 she wont travel anymore. They get like that don't they!! Quite child like and happier to stay in their own homes.
So tonight we have been to the Village Church's 9 lessons and joined in with the carols. The church was packed and beautifully lit just with candles - quite magical.
Mr A has to return to work tomorrow but I am now off for Christmas and will be getting ready for Matthew who I will collect in the afternoon.
Hope you have all enjoyed a restful Sunday, probably easten too much and already started eating chocolates before The Day!! Shame on you if you have - naughty. Slap wrists.
Thank you for dropping in and being a part of my extraordinary life - always a challenge.
Until the 'next time' - stay safe, healthy and in love with life. xx
