lumps of coal - how'd that tradition ever get started anyway? funny you should ask - 'cuz i wondered the same - this is what i found:

some people say that the lumps of coal story started in holland - back in the 16th century... before christmas - children would put their clogs by the fireplace before stockings were used - when a child was bad - they got a lump of coal - but if they were good - they got a small toy, cookies or a piece of candy

do you suppose this tradition still holds true in holland today - it's also said coal was given by santa - as a punishment for a family's bad deeds - how sad for the children - i'm not sure who makes these stories up or begins these traditions but clearly i enjoy the happier ones - with santa riding around in his sleigh - dropping presents to all boys and girls - knowing that's what makes for...
