Myths and legends

On a day of continuous driving rain we decided to take our visitor to the famous Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh. Although we had been several times before, this was the first time since the steel ‘umbrella’ was removed after covering it for 14 years to allow it to dry out and then be made waterproof before restoration could take place.
Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446 as a Collegiate Church and is still used for weekly services. It has been a popular visitor attraction for the last 200 years but even more so since the publication and film of Dan Brown's novel, The Da Vinci Code with people seeking the supposed place of the Holy Grail. There are so many theories, myths and legends connected with the chapel and its very ornate stone carvings which continue to mystify people trying to interpret the intriguing symbols. Everywhere are many biblical images, creatures, plants including some that were only found in America which supposedly had not yet been discovered, angels playing musical instruments and over a hundred ‘Green Men’ and the famous Apprentice Pillar.
According to myths and legends there are hidden treasures of all sorts but I think the real treasure is the workmanship of the 15th century craftsmen.
