Old pit

On the A1 in north Nottinghamshire at what used to be Blyth roundabout before the A1 was speeded up.

The high building to the right is Harworth colliery which is currently mothballed I believe. Its' slag heap is the hill to the left which I've seen become greener over the years. There are still traces of the black slag on the sides of the hill and the end of a conveyor belt can be seen sticking out from the summit.

The Yorks, Notts and Derby coalfield used to be one of the most productive in the UK. However there is little deep mining now. Open cast is still carried on but the mining industry has virtually vanished. The tradition of sons following their dads down the pit has gone with little to replace it.
