The Taxi Queue
Another photo from last night, this time taken after midnight.
We left the pub at around 1.45am, and were very disappointed to hear from the bouncers that there was nowhere in the whole city that was open any later! (Seriously?!). So we walked to the nearest taxi rank to wait for a taxi home. While we were waiting I popped into the Chinese across the street for two curry chips and a chip, and snapped this shot through the door.
The guys on the very left of the frame are at the front of the queue, and Luce and John are about 2/3 across, just to the right of the lamppost. You'd think that that small number of people wouldn't take too long to clear, but 90 minutes later we were still standing there! Freezing cold and soaking wet, with taxis arriving at a rate of about one every 15 minutes, if even.
As always on these kinds of occasions, the people around us provided plenty of entertainment. There was a lovely girl behind us who decided to put her hands on our heads to protect our hair, which was a nice gesture, but absolutely pointless. And a guy in front in a ladies hat, who asked us to sing him something "Derry-ish", leading to our part of the queue giving a rousing rendition of Danny Boy (there is video evidence). For some reason it didn't seem to be cheer everyone up the way we hoped...
Eventually we did get home, around 3.30am, and I really feel for the dozens of people who were behind us in the queue! Who knows when they'll have got picked up. But even the ordeal henceforth known as "The Great Taxi Queue of 2013" couldn't put a dampener on a fantastic night out :)
