Under Repair
The challenge for today is architecture. Our province's capital city is Edmonton, home to the Beaux Arts style Alberta Legislature Building. During the Christmas season, the grounds are beautifully decorated, adding color and festivity to the large trees and skating ponds. "This would be the perfect photo for today's challenge," I thought. I managed to coax Mr CH to chauffeur me to the grounds, even though the temperature was minus 17 with added wind chill.
When we arrived at the Leg (pronounced ledge, not leg) I was disappointed to see the dome covered. Here's a little about the repair in an article published on Christmas Day -
The Restoration Job of the Century
"More than 16 storeys high, sheltered from the elements by large swaths of white plastic sheeting, a crew of masons steadily work to install each of the 16,000 individual terracotta pieces that will eventually cover the dome of the Alberta legislature.
Much of the $10-million restoration work is complete, with 12,000 tiles painstakingly laid on the minor dome above the legislative assembly.
In recent weeks, the focus has turned to restoring the major dome with the remaining 6,000 pieces, many of them ornately carved. The domes haven’t undergone a major facelift since construction of the building in 1912..."
So this is what you see in the photo for today - tarps and plastic instead of the elegantly shaped dome. Admittedly, the grounds were still very beautiful and the building did need to be repaired.
