Great Northern Basin - Langley Mill
This canal basin and associated locks sits, near the Great Northern Inn and just inside the Derbyshire border, at the junction of three canals - the Nottingham (now largely filled-in); the Erewash (part of the Grand Union Canal); and the Cromford
This basin was constructed by William Jessop in 1796 and became a major transportation hub with wharves and storage facilities, last used by a commercial barge in 1952.
The basin was restored between 1971 and 1973, re-opening on 23 May 1973.
It now marks the start of the 30 miles-long Erewash Trail, created in 2010.
The canal, at this location, has a population of Grass-wrack Pondweed - a rarity in Derbyshire!
The surrounding waterways and rivers feed important reservoirs and also support populations of Crayfish, Kingfishers, Water Voles and Trout.
