celebration day

Went to see mum for lunch and brought her a galette des rois. It's another celebratory, festive cake made with puff pastry and filled with frangipane. It also has sujets in it. Pierre got the baby Jesus!

Made ourselves a delicious dinner of smoked salmon on rye to start, steak and chips with pepper sauce for main course, and the rest of the frangipane tart for pud. Healthy eating starts tomorrow.

We sat out on the terrace to celebrate at 12 o'clock. There were kids lighting fireworks (it's all very un-Health & Safety here!), people cheering, and members of the Les Pilles "Pilanthropes" association setting off Chinese lanterns. It was really quite nice. Carol, our next-door neighbour, stuck her head out and wished us a Happy New Year. She ended up coming over with her husband, George, and a bottle of Champagne, and we all sat out on the terrace. We moved inside after a bit and warmed ourselves up by the fire.
