Happy New Year!
Not the best start to 2014. One of the calves we got before Christmas was a bit poorly, she was the last to come for food and she was standing like she had really bad trapped wind. The weather forecast wasn't great so we took her in and gave her some hay and crunch mix and we checked her overnight. This morning, New Year's Day, she seemed still not right so I called the vet. She came out quickly, got some blood for testing and dosed her with antibiotics. The main test we're having is for Johnes disease, which is a wasting disease spread from cow to calf and the only real solution is culling so not looking forward to that. The calf is actually 3 years old in March but she is so small you'd only think she was just coming up for a year. Poor girl. So this is our New Year's Day supper. Beef bourgignon made with beef cheeks. It was delicious and just what we needed.
