Medlar...

Walked through the Newarke Museum gardens in my lunch hour.
It`s got a lovely selection of plants and trees, ranging from the everyday to the unusual. There are a couple of odd looking fruit trees including this one which is the `Medlar`.
Apparently it`s an ancient and fairly rare fruit tree, not exactly your bog standard garden centre variety.
The fruit itself is only edible after its been stored until its gone" wrinkly and mushy" and the flesh has the texture of "stewed apples with a buttery taste"
Think I`ll give it a miss thank you very much and stick with a Cox`s Pippin
