Sitting………
……..and taking in the view.
Early evening and finally the rain stopped and we could visit the Kumaras for a walk.
The Kumaras - Raumanukas Reserve.
The site was a kumara garden when Europeans first settled, so it got the name "The Kumaras", but Maori prefer the name Raumanukas.
- The Raumanuka Reserve, at the end of Staples Street, is a popular place for walking and a great spot to view a wide range of birds that use the Moon Creek Estuary for feeding and resting.
- It is also a very important historic site. Iwi have lived, gardened and navigated this waterway for many hundreds of years.
- A plaque that commemorates the landing of the first European settlers marks the location of the original harbour.
Also the Motueka Sandspit Scenic Reserves
-This is an internationally recognised site for local and migrant shorebirds
-Access also from the Kumaras
