Scenes from everyday life

Untimely death of a hero

I've walked past this plaque many times over the years but I've only just learned the story behind it.

Corporal Sullivan was an Australian soldier who won the VC in 1919 during the allies' involvement in the Russian Civil War.

In 1937, aged 40, he was part of a 100-strong Australian military contingent attending the coronation of George VI. Tragically, Corporal Sullivan slipped in the road near where this plaque is now positioned and banged his head on the kerb. He died from his injuries.

A sad end to a brave life.
