Woman and Child

This sculpture by Anne Davidson sits on the main pathway on Festival Square, Lothian Road since 1986. Woman and Child was a reaction to and a symbol as the City of Edinburgh’s stand against the Apartheid around the time Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The sculpture was commissioned at a time when Edinburgh Council favoured the use of art as a visual means of discussion and symbolism.

The sculpture was unveiled on July 2nd 1986 by the then-exiled Suganya Chetty, a member of the African National Congress who was living in Edinburgh.
