Such beautiful words

I thought it was time for another blip from our family archives.

This memorial stone to the ancestors of my wife's paternal great grand parents is to be found in a cemetery in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, UK.

The beautiful words scripted for this memorial one assumes were from the pen of her husband, a published poet of that era. The transcript follows below:

ERECTED

SARAH ABBOT

SHE WAS FOR FIFTY YEARS THE POET'S WIFE
A BETTER NEVER GRACED AN ENGLISH HOME
WITHOUT COMPLAINT SHE SPENT A TOILSOME LIFE
NOR SHED ONE TEAR IN THE PROSPECT OF THE TOMB
SUCH STRONG THO SIMPLE FAITH TO HER WAS GIVEN
DEATH ONLY SEEMED THE DOOR THAT LED TO HEAVEN

ALSO OF
RICHARD ABBOT F.R.H.S.
HUSBAND OF THE ABOVE
WHO DIED JULY 15TH 1904
