Oldbury Woods

[bOldbury Hill and Styants Wood is located within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and home to a huge Iron Age fort built sometime between 150 and 50 BC. Mainly made up of oak, birch, rowan and beech, the area is thought to have been coppiced since Saxon times, and the practice continues today. The woods are best enjoyed in late autumn as the leaves begin to fall. The ramparts of the Iron Age fort can still be seen, it is 2.5 miles (4km) long and encloses an area of 124 acres. Built by the Celtic ‘Wealden’ people, it was probably used mainly as a refuge and was not permanently occupied.][/b]
