Munich Day Four: Thom and Jen go a’wandering
Today Thom and I were left to our own devices as both Laura and Tobias had work to do, so we headed out into the city to see the sights.
Munich really is a beautiful city, I love the different buildings and colours of everything, but I felt like this summed up the day quite nicely. We somehow lost ourselves in a massive department store that looked smaller on the outside. Think a cross between Harrods and Selfridges and John Lewis and you get the idea! Somehow every floor we went on we managed to get lost and go up another escalator. We even managed to get right to the top of the building where I took some aerial shots of the view. A rather awkward English moment, as there was a girl on the phone who was crying…but because she was speaking German we had no idea what the problem was. Cue awkwardness, taking a few photographs and leaving. Turns out we did the right thing, as we asked Tobias and Laura later what we should have done. The answer? Apparently nothing. Germans are embarrassed to be asked if they are alright after they have been crying. I guess the North of England is a lot different to Bavaria…
A quick stop later at the flat, via the university to pick the key up off Laura, all four of us headed out to a pizza restaurant. Now we were warned that these pizzas were going to be massive…didn’t realise just how big. How big? Bigger than the biggest plates they could buy. I’m proud to say I ate all of mine bar the crust, with a beer. Tobias decided that he would take photographs during the consumption of said beer, so I got to see what all my friends feel like!
After food we headed back to the flat for a few more drinks, before Laura went to pick up her man, Paolo, from his friend’s flat. Paolo had travelled ten hours from Italy to Germany to come see her, along with a snowboarding trip later in the week. At least Thom and I don’t have such an epic journey just to see each other.
