Outside the floating market, Bangkok

The markets on the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok are some of my favourite places of all in Thailand, in fact, anywhere. If you want life, you'll find it there in abundance.

This shot was taken (with my now day-old camera; and yes, it's still on auto - don't judge me) down one of the back streets. It's untypical of the market in that it's a quiet, darkened spot rather than a hive of activity.

In the centre is a photograph of the King of Thailand. Everywhere you'll find photographs of the King, and his wife, and there is a law of lèse majesté there. As a result, dropping a bank note - all of which bear an image of the King - often results in a swift prayer or apology, where the note is quickly collected and touched to the head or the heart. Others place the notes in their wallet with the King's head facing upwards.
