The Old and the New
It is most unusual to find two churches in the same churchyard - there are very few examples in England. Here we have Heptonstall, and I believe Westminster Abbey is another.
The 'old' church dates from 1256 and is dedicated to Thomas a Becket who was murdered in 1170, and became a saint in 1173,
By the 19th Century the fabric of the church had deteriorated over the years and a great storm in 1847 damaged it beyond repair.
The 'new' church was built in 1854 and was dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle.
The old church remains, in ruins, as a memorial to times past.
