Behind the Name
If proper nouns were allowed in Scrabble, my name would not be a high scoring word! However, when I checked a site called Behind the Name there was a wealth of information. See link -
"GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: Biblical, English, Ancient Greek (Latinized)
OTHER SCRIPTS: Ευνικη (Ancient Greek)
PRONOUNCED: YOO-nis (English) [key]
Meaning & History
Latinized form of the Greek name Ευνικη (Eunike) which meant "good victory". The New Testament mentions her as the mother of Timothy. As an English name, it was first used after the Protestant Reformation."
The site goes on to provide some stats. It reached the height of popularity in 1908. Then there was a dramatic drop until about 1950, after which it is rarely used.
I did not like my name when I was younger, because it was so different and no one could spell it. In this day and age, it seems the more different the name, the better. I guess I was bornnamed too soon! This site does some rating and on the strange to boring continuum, it is 69% strange, and only 31% boring. If I had known this as a young person, I could have used it as ammunition!
And, then there's having my name end in an "s" sound and the start of my married name begin with an "s". If you repeat it fast it all blends together :(
I do like my name now and the part I have always liked and hope is a true outcome in my life is the meaning - good victory.
