Facing the Modern: The Portait in Vienna 1900
> Last day of this moving and memorable exhibition at the National Gallery. The beaming light above the head is from the exhibition lighting, rather than anything necessarily supernatural. The poster is taken from a portrait of Amalie Zuckerkandl (1917-18) by Gustav Klimt. The portrait was unfinished. The whole period - 1867 to 1918- may represent in many respects a past that has been and gone, but for me it is intriguingly resonant: a flourishing liberal multicultural and cosmopolitan era with burgeoning anxiety and alienation.
