Winter Garden III

There's something about January that makes me long for the sight of tender new food crop leaves, such as radish (2012) or beet (2013) -- or this January, carrots.

I ended up with an overabundance of local carrots at the end of 2013, and had to store some of them in the garage. We've had a relative mild winter, and it was clear that some of those carrots were feeling spring-like urges, so today I brought them all in, topped and tailed them, roasted the roots for soup, and began my third winter "garden" with these yellow but still vigorous shoots.

I hope they can hold on until Wednesday, when some sunshine is forecast.
