An unsettling sight
Here I am, busy getting prepared for an art show on Sunday and I look out my window (you've seen the pictures from my second story office window). The neighbor across the street is mowing his lawn. Nothing odd about that. He stops, sits on his driveway, cleaning up the mower. His wife comes out. That's when it gets weird. They are wearing different clothes.
In the six years since they built their house across from ours, I have NEVER seen them wear different clothes. By that I mean, color coordinated, twins. She makes their clothes and they are always wearing matching outfits, usually two-tone with a lighter shade shirt and darker shade pant (long or short). I've jokingly called him the UPS man sometimes when he wears brown. Working in the yard, going shopping, attending church or the neighborhood picnic, they are Tweeedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
This evening, he's wearing blue and she's wearing green. I called my wife, not telling her what's up. She looks out the window..... "There's something wrong!" she gasps, immediately understanding the situation. "Did they have an argument?", "Are they getting a divorce?"
I don't know. This is a shock to the everyday normalcy of our little cul de sac. A rift in Pleasantville. The ramifications could be devastating. Birds will begin migrating south months too early, Trains will run on time. Sheep will grow their wool on the inside. A crack will open in the universe and Pez candy will rain down to cover the earth. We're in for a bumpy ride.
