Gallustag

Today we celebrate Gallus Day. This event goes back to the 7th century, as the Irish monk Gallus arrived in our region on his pilgrimage from Ireland to Italy. The legend tells that Gallus made a false step as a bear suprised him. Instead of beeing scared he commanded the bear to bring some firewood. The bear did as assigned. Gallus stood at this place, cause he belived in an act of God, and founded a hermitage near the river called Steinach. Gallus died on the 16th October 620 or 640. This is the source for our Gallus Day.

The inofficial name of the place where they suspect the story took place is Bangor, because Gallus was a monk from the Irish Bangor Abbey. Our Bangor is very close to the cathedrale of St. Gallen.

The Steinach is no longer a river in town, but an underground sewage system and people don't have a day off from work as they used to have in the past. Times have changed...

I hope you'll have a relaxing weekend.
