The Squirrel's Secret

Further tales from the duck pond.

The last duck pond story, about a squirrel with a cookie (which is not guaranteed to be, but possibly could be, the same squirrel as this one), can be found here.

Temperatures have become milder than they had been. All of the snow on campus is melting, and the campus creatures are very active! Squirrels, squirrels, everywhere, some of them chasing each other round and round! (And bunnies too. And birds!)

At the duck pond, the mallards were enjoying the fine day. Along the edge of the grass, way over by the trees, a squirrel began gathering leaves in her mouth. Then she took the leaves and scampered up a nearby tree, lickety-split!

But wait, then she vanished. Where did she go? She disappeared into a hole in the tree branch. There was motion inside, the flip of a fuzzy gray tail. And then just her nose reappeared, without the leaves. She was making a nest in the knot-hole on the tree branch!

Then out of the hole she came. And she sat on the branch above the nest, preening and bathing. And smiling. For the squirrel had a secret . . . And in about six weeks, her secret may be out! :-)

The soundtrack: Jackson Browne, Ready or Not.
