£1,500 for lifeboat appeal
Scarborough RNLI’s £200,000 appeal received a big boost from Heroes Welcome.
The lifeboat was one of several charities – all with a heroes theme – which shared the proceeds of A Night Before the Colours dinner, staged at the Spa in November.
At a presentation ceremony at the town hall on Tuesday, coxswain Tom Clark and senior helmsman Rudi Barman accepted a £1,500 cheque on behalf of the RNLI.
The money will go towards the sum needed to buy a launch-and-recovery vehicle for Scarborough’s new Shannon lifeboat, due to arrive in 2015.
A Night Before the Colours is an annual fundraising event run by Major John Senior and Captain Tony Viney of Heroes Welcome. John is also Scarborough RNLI’s lifeboat operations manager.
Over the five years the event has been running, over £60,000 has been raised for various charities.
Besides the RNLI, the other beneficiaries of last year’s dinner are the Royal British Legion, the Yorkshire Regiment, SSAFA, First Light and the Cambridge Centre.
Representatives of each charity were at Tuesday’s presentation, along with Nick Thomas of Qdos Entertainment and John Easby of Adverset; the two companies support Heroes Welcome in numerous ways.
The cheques were presented by the mayor, Cllr Andrew Backhouse, who attended A Night Before the Colours.
