Stark Mills and The Mill Girl

The Stark Mills are one of many in the Amoskeag Mill District. Once the home of one of the largest textile mills, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was a textile manufacturer which founded Manchester, New Hampshire. From modest beginnings in near wilderness, it grew throughout the 19th century into the largest cotton textile plant in the world. Though it didn't start out as such, there were unfair working conditions, child labor and other things that made it fall apart economically. The Mill Girl is a tribute to the women who worked in the mills, industrial revolutionaries who broke with the past to earn a living, making history and creating the future. In 1880, one third of Manchester's population, 3, 385 women worked in the mills of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. In the last 20 years the buildings have been refurbished and are now home to many medical and technology companies as well as some pretty beautiful condominiums.
