Saint John the Baptist Church.Peterborough.
This is a beautiful stained glass window at Saint John the Baptist Church in Peterborough.
There is also a cathedral in the town so I think this church gets overlooked and it is so wonderful inside and out.
St John the Baptist church in Peterborough stands half way up Church Street. The current church building opened in 1407, replacing an earlier church in Bondgate which suffered from flooding. The interior of the church was restored in the 19th century, during which time the galleries were removed and a large East Window installed over the high alter showing the Ascension.
Much of the woodwork and screens are modern, with the chancel screen added in 1917, to which the rood screen was added in 1938. Inside also is the Lady Chapel, restored in 1923. Inside this chapel is a Georgian monument to Matthew Wyldbore (1781), twice elected as MP for Peterborough. The window in the Lady Chapel depicts the resurrection. Behind the high altar are reredoes showing St John the Baptist, St Peter, Bishop Hugh of Lincoln and Abbot Genge.
Most of the stained glass windows within the church are Victorian, depicting various biblical scenes and events. The vestment cupboard in the north-west corner dates from 1569. The doors show a carving of a Spanish crucifixion. The font is also old, dating from the 15th century, and is made of an octagonal bowl supported on a panelled plinth.
St John the Baptist Church holds regular services. It is at other times open to the public and contains a small gift shop and a cafe. It is one of the tourist attractions in Peterborough, close to Peterborough Cathedral.
